The Wolverine hotfix dims scent trails, addresses crashes and explores toggle options, but Insomniac has not set a date for a full off switch.
Insomniac Games pushed a hotfix for Marvel’s Wolverine on September 19 that reduces the opacity of the scent trails and Audio Sense indicators players have been mocking as “fart gas” since launch. The studio says it’s also exploring toggleable options for a future update, though no full off switch has been confirmed.
The scent trails are the neon-tinted paths Logan follows to locate objectives during certain missions, appearing when he’s tracking a specific scent or sound – a person, a bottle of whisky, or another clue tied to the story. Some players nicknamed the effect “fart gas” for how it looked trailing behind targets, and the visual became one of the loudest pre-release talking points around the game, alongside broader Marvel gaming chatter like the recent Marvel Rivals season update. Even with the criticism, Wolverine remains a combat-first action-adventure rather than an exploration sandbox, so the trail was never going to make or break the experience on its own.
What the Hotfix Actually Changes
Beyond the visual tweak, the patch also addresses common crashes that a small percentage of players had been hitting since launch, according to Insomniac’s support page. Players who tested the update quickly shared comparisons showing the difference: instead of a bright gas-like streak, Logan now leaves a dimmer pool of ambient color on the ground in front of him.
It still points toward the objective – this is a presentation change, not a removal of the guidance itself. For context on how that compares to other recent Marvel releases, the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls release timing has been generating its own separate buzz this month.
Insomniac’s statement on the matter, paraphrased from its patch notes, indicates the team continues evaluating ways to improve the Senses system, including exploring toggleable options for a future update. That’s a notably softer stance than simply defending the feature as-is, but it stops well short of promising an on/off switch anytime soon.
| Hotfix Element | Status as of September 19 |
|---|---|
| Common crashes | Addressed for affected players |
| Scent Trail opacity | Reduced, less visually intense |
| Audio Sense indicators | Presentation adjusted alongside trails |
| Full toggle option | Under evaluation, not yet available |
No Date Yet for a Full Toggle
The hotfix is live now on Marvel’s Wolverine, Sony’s PlayStation 5 exclusive, but Insomniac hasn’t attached a timeline to the toggleable options it’s investigating. Until then, players get a quieter version of the effect rather than the ability to switch it off entirely.
