A new Gears of War: E-Day estimate separates 1.7 million Game Pass players from 230,000 sales and more than $37 million in reported revenue.
Gears of War: E-Day reportedly reached around 1.7 million Game Pass players and generated more than $37 million in estimated revenue, according to figures from Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott reported by Eurogamer. That total includes outright sales, microtransactions and Premium Edition upgrades; it is not a confirmed Microsoft sales disclosure.
More than 722,000 Game Pass players reportedly paid $30 for the Premium Edition upgrade. Those figures put the game’s subscription reach and paid engagement alongside a much smaller estimate of outright purchases, a useful distinction when reading launch numbers for a subscription release. Game Pass can deliver a large audience without that audience translating directly into individual game sales.

What the sales estimate counts
Alinea estimates that about 230,000 copies were sold after advance access began at the start of October. The reported breakdown is 168,000 copies on Steam and 62,000 across Xbox consoles and PC, with IGN also reporting the estimate and noting that Microsoft had not officially confirmed it.
The pricing helps explain why copies sold are only part of the picture. The $99.99 Premium Edition included early access from October 1, while Game Pass subscribers could pay $30 for the Premium upgrade and its add-on extras; the full launch for regular Game Pass subscribers and Standard Edition buyers followed on Tuesday, October 6. That upgrade path is a different proposition from a full game purchase, much as launch pricing and Game Pass access can represent distinct ways to play.
| Reported measure | Alinea estimate |
|---|---|
| Game Pass players | Around 1.7 million |
| Premium upgrades | More than 722,000 at $30 |
| Copies sold | Around 230,000 |
| Total revenue | More than $37 million |
Revenue, upgrades and the limits of the comparison
Elliott’s estimate counts nearly one million people as having paid something for E-Day once Premium upgrades are included. That is broader than the outright-copy figure, but it does not mean every Game Pass player paid extra, nor does it establish how many subscribers would have bought the game without access through the service.
Elliott speculated that, without day-one Game Pass, many of those players might have bought E-Day at $70. That is an analyst’s counterfactual, not a measured outcome: the available estimates do not show how many subscription players would otherwise have become full-price customers. The reported $37 million figure likewise combines several revenue streams rather than representing sales of boxed or digital copies alone.
The dates set the shape of the launch window: Premium Edition early access started Thursday, October 1, and the full release followed on Tuesday, October 6. The reported purchase estimates cover Steam and Xbox platforms, while the Game Pass figure captures players accessing the game through a subscription. For a series with a long-running PC audience, Gears of War’s continued PC interest is a separate part of the picture from subscription reach.
