Autonomous-driving company Pony.ai and Toyota say they’re teaming up with the goal of one day cranking out a bunch of “fully driverless robotaxis.” The two companies intend to kick off their partnership sometime this year with around $139 million in capital from GAC Toyota Motor Co. — a joint venture between Toyota China and GAC, a Chinese state-owned automaker. The investment follows Toyota’s move to pump about $400 million into Pony back in 2020. Going forward, Toyota says it’ll give Pony an unspecified number of its EVs, while Pony will outfit them with autonomous-driving tech and the firm’s “robotaxi network…

VoxNeuro previously partnered with Canadian Armed Forces to study military members’ brain performance post head trauma. VoxNeuro, which develops software that measures brain performance, has raised $4.5 million CAD ($3.4 million USD) in all-equity funding as it looks to expand across the United States (US). According to VoxNeuro, the financing was led by the undisclosed family office that contributed to its previous $4-million round in October. That office is now its largest shareholder, the company noted. The funding round also saw participation from its strategic investor g.tec, which develops high-performance brain-computer interfaces and neurotechnologies, as well as Klick Health,…

Google just won a partial reprieve in one of the antitrust cases leveled against the company. Federal Judge Amit Mehta has ruled that the Department of Justice (DOJ) and key states can’t claim that Google is protecting a monopoly by promoting its own products in search results over alternatives. The plaintiffs haven’t proved there’s an “anticompetitive effect,” according to the decision. Judge Mehta also tossed antitrust allegations regarding Android’s compatibility and anti-fragmentation agreements, Google Assistant, internet of things devices and the Android Open Source Project. The DOJ can still make its remaining arguments, Judge Mehta says. Notably, officials claim Google…

Eastern European Cold War–era computing has a poor reputation. The picture is one of a landscape littered with uninspired attempts to copy American IBM PCs, British ZX Spectrums, and other Western computers. But then there was Yugoslavia’s Galaksija, a very inspired bid to put a computer into the hands of regular comrades. The Galaksija is a Z80-based, 8-bit DIY machine, cleverly designed so that its bill of materials meshed exactly with what a Yugoslavian was able to import from Western Europe. During its brief heyday, thousands were built, leading to commercially assembled Galaksijas finding their way into homes and schools…
