371 An internship can be an important step for any young college student. But more often than not, those interns are left doing “busy work” while clocking in 40 hours a week over the summer.  The team behind Runway thought there had to be a better way for students to get business experience (and make money on their own schedule). So they launched a new type of platform to play “matchmaker” between businesses and college students. The startup, launched by a group of Georgia Tech students, works as an on-demand matching platform for  companies to hire vetted college students year-round…

The US government has initiated an official investigation into an advanced China-made chip integrated into Huawei’s latest smartphone.  According to Bloomberg, the Commerce Department, which has previously imposed a series of sanctions against both Huawei and China’s chip sector, announced it is actively seeking more information about the purported 7-nanometer processor featured in the Mate 60 Pro.  This chip was manufactured by China’s Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), an entity blacklisted by the US government, thereby restricted from accessing US technology. Air is inserted into Raac during construction, making it a light-weight material. Credit: Wikimedia, CC BY-SA More than 100 schools in England have been fully or partly closed just days before the start of the new academic year, due to concerns over the safety of concrete roof panels. Problems with what the construction industry terms “reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete” (Raac) were brought to a head in August 2023, when a Raac ceiling panel, that had been deemed safe by inspectors, collapsed at a school in England. In response, the Department for Education issued an urgent alert. More than 156 schools…

Following mutual resolution, both startups agree to no more public statements. Two robotics supply-chain startups battling over a pair of patents have announced that they have amicably resolved the litigation between them. Calgary-based robotics startup Attabotics made the initial complaint. It alleged that Urbx, a Boston, Mass.-based fulfillment automation company, infringed two patents held by Attabotics, by “making, importing, using, selling, and/or offering to sell in the United States a robotic storage and retrieval system embodying [Attabotics’] patented invention.” But as noted in the parties’ joint motion to dismiss dated June 12, 2023, which was granted by the district…

Why it matters: Microsoft’s ambitious efforts to eliminate its carbon footprint involve lowering emissions and removing carbon from the atmosphere. The emerging carbon capture industry is attempting numerous methods, one of which involves rocks that naturally absorb the substance, but that carbon still has to go somewhere. Microsoft has struck a deal with Heirloom Carbon, a startup that has developed a process for using limestone to capture carbon to fight climate change. The technique could contribute to Microsoft’s ongoing attempt to become carbon-negative. Limestone naturally absorbs carbon over many years, but Heirloom’s method accelerates the process. The company uses a…

Roomba j7+ features: PrecisionVision Navigation | P.O.O.P. guarantee | Easy robot integrationThe Roomba j7+ is one of my favorite robot vacuums to use throughout my house, whether on carpet, tile, or rugs. After a few initial runs, the j7+ can map a home’s layout. Next, you can go to the iRobot app and choose your cleaning method. You can select which rooms you want to be cleaned, in what order, and how many times you want each room cleaned. There aren’t many robot vacuums that I trust to remove ingrained pet hair from my carpet, but the j7+ is an exception…

You might not have realised it, but there’s a subtle design element in Starfield’s starmap that makes navigating the game’s universe a smidge easier. Starfield has an absolutely massive number of planets to explore; more than 1000, in fact. But using the game’s starmap isn’t necessarily the easiest thing in the world, unless you know exactly what it’s telling you. As spotted by one user in the game’s subreddit, there’s actually a nice piece of visual design on the map which tells you exactly which star systems you’ve been to, and which ones you can or can’t visit…

Researchers who created a soft robot that could navigate simple mazes without human or computer direction have now built on that work, creating a “brainless” soft robot that can navigate more complex and dynamic environments. One half of the robot is shaped like a twisted ribbon that extends in a straight line, while the other half is shaped like a more tightly twisted ribbon that also twists around itself like a spiral staircase. This asymmetrical design means that one end of the robot exerts more force on the ground than the other end. Credit: Jie Yin, NC State University Researchers…
