Something to look forward to: Last year, Apple introduced Continuity Camera in iOS 16, allowing users to pair their iPhone with a Mac and use it as a high-quality webcam. No prizes for guessing who the champion in our trending chart is this week – the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max is still going strong in the week it went on sale. However the family monopoly was broken by Xiaomi, who introduced the Redmi Note 13 family. We have the Pro+ member of that lineup in second, followed by the Pro in third. Graphical abstract. Credit: ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces (2023). DOI: 10.1021/acsami.3c10220 Scientists have developed a new method that converts seawater into drinking water that could be useful in disaster zones where there is limited electrical power. The most popular method for removing salt (sodium chloride) from sea water is reverse osmosis, which uses a porous membrane that allows water molecules through but not salt. However, this method requires a high pressure and substantial amounts of electricity. The membrane often clogs up, reducing the efficiency of the process. The new technique, developed by a team of scientists from the Universities of…

The New York Police Department (NYPD) is implementing a new security measure at the Times Square subway station. It’s deploying a security robot to patrol the premises, which authorities say is meant to “keep you safe.” We’re not talking about a RoboCop-like machine or any human-like biped robot — the K5, which was made by California-based company Knightscope, looks like a massive version of R2-D2. Albert Fox Cahn, the executive director of privacy rights group Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, has a less flattering description for it, though, and told The New York Times that it’s like a “trash can on wheels.”K5…
