In late September, a Japanese Super Smash Bros. Ultimate player discovered that you could glitch the game into giving King K. Rool two crowns, essentially allowing him to infinitely spam this attack and move up in the tier list. In other words, it’s a game-breaking bug discovered seven years after the fighting game came out.
The discovered glitch isn’t super hard to pull off but you have to die and lose a stock to accomplish it. Honestly, leave it up to a Smash player to suddenly figure this out at random and disrupt the meta.
News of the glitch started to spread after Melee God Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma shared the Japanese player’s clip and instructions. He said: “So you’re telling me that seven years after Ultimate is released, we have an extremely niche, situational tech that allows K. Rool to sacrifice one of his own stocks in order to become a high tier for the rest of the game. God, I love Smash Bros.”
Is Nintendo patching the King K. Rool glitch?
The King K. Rool infinite crown glitch is definitely an interesting one. It can lead to some very impressive plays from a talented K. Rool player that could be seen as “cheap” in the FGC. However, it also leaves him pretty vulnerable since some fighters can easily sabatoge him while he’s off-stage, causing him to lose a life without unlocking the second crown.
Of course, the Japanese player soon found a way to spawn the second crown without SD’ing, which will probably make King K. Rool a bigger threat if enough pros get the hang of it.
“I’ve never thought I’ll see a new K. Rool tech seven years into the game, but I’m here for it,” said one Smash player on YouTube. “Everything for keeping this game looking fresh and new.”
While it’s definitely entertaining and possibly game-breaking, King K. Rool is already considered pretty low on the current tier list. So it’s currently unclear if this really threatens the competitive meta. At the moment, I’d say no.
However, even if it did impact the meta, Nintendo probably wouldn’t give a fuck. Steve has been broken for years and some of these exploits have allowed him to dominate the esports scene to an oppressive extent. And instead of fixing it, Nintendo even disallowed tourneys from banning Steve. Basically the opposite of helping.
Hungrybox jokingly shared a screenshot of some maintenance, but it was a content update and Nintendo is very unlikely to take any action. Still, Smash players are a bit worried since Nintendo loves to ruin the competitive scene’s fun at any chance it gets.
In reality, the King K. Rool glitch is more a fun look at how the Smash community is always discovering new things in super old games that haven’t changed for years more than it is a threat to the competitive meta.
Please. Nintendo. Let us have this one.
