The FGC has reacted with outrage at a YouTube video posted by eight-time Evo champion Justin “Jwong” Wong where he vlogged his trip to Saudi Arabia.
From Marvel vs. Capcom to to Tekken to King of Fighters, Jwong is a top fighting game pro that has become pretty big in the community due to his Evo victories, commentating, and content creation. However, fighting game fans have reacted with anger after Jwong posted a YouTube video about his trip to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
“I went to Riyadh and I vlogged everything and the dessert at the hotel is GOATED,” Jwong tweeted.
FGC angry as Saudi Arabia takes over esports
The Esports World Cup already had the FGC a bit concerned about Saudi Arabia attempting to take over the financially desperate esports industry, but it got very personal when the country purchased Evo, the largest fighting game event of the year.
At that point, it seemed like it was quite inevitable that Saudi Arabia would soon have control of the entire fighting game scene due to its lack of money and organization.
With this ongoing discourse all over social media, it’s not too surprising that the esports community reacted with hostility when Jwong posted a clearly sponsored video of him hyping up Riyadh.
Wrote one fan: “This is legitimately the worst and most obvious Saudi propaganda from anyone in the FGC/esports scene. Good job Justin, I didn’t know it was possible to top anything Team Falcons has put out, but you did it.”
It only got angrier: “Dude, you know that Saudi Arabia has been trying to buy the esports scene as a part of their economic/cultural expansion. They are specifically using you as a puppet to do PR for them. The royal family dismembered a journalist named Jamal Khashoggi and put him in a suitcase.”
Others simply wondered how much Jwong was paid to make the video.
The comments on Jwong’s video are more of the same thing.
One commenter put it best: “The human rights violations are GOATED!!!”
It’s honestly unclear if Jwong was paid to hype up the food in Riyadh or if he truly enjoyed the food. But the FGC wasn’t having it either way. Some pointed out that he was still spreading propaganda and ignoring the human rights violations in the country by making this type of content.
It’s clear from the FGC’s comments on X and YouTube that the part that truly frightens them is the chokehold that Saudi Arabia has on esports, including the fighting game scene. Seeing their favorite creators and tournaments sell out to Saudi Arabia for what’s likely big bucks has just made the scene feel less authentic and more like a corporate mission of a controversial country.
Said one sad fan: “Hey bro, I’ve been a longtime fan and enjoy that you make content you like for your fam. This one is just disappointing though. FGC is about grassroots, hype, and community, not corpo interests and countries that butcher journalists.”
Jwong has yet to make a comment about the video and has already posted other less controversial videos and tweets. It will likely be forgotten.
