Valve is making no secret that Counter-Strike 2 is just a gambling-heavy cash cow for the developer. In a recent update, CS2 received the Genesis Uplink Terminal, which basically just makes skin-addicted players pay more.
Earlier this week, the Genesis Uplink Terminal arrived in Counter-Strike 2, a weekly drop that showcases skins for sale from the new Genesis Collection. Basically, players are shown five skins and they can choose to purchase or pass. A pass on all five skins results in the terminal being “burned,” rendering it no longer useable.
This is different for skin collectors in the sense that they don’t have to open a case and can instead purchase a randomized skin of their choice outright. While taking the “gambling” out of the skins seems like a good thing, the Counter-Strike 2 community has felt iffy about the update due to how expensive the items are.
One player ranted on X: “They did it. Valve came up with an item shop that’s somehow worse than gambling.”
“It’s crazy how even if you buy it for that price and try to sell it on the market for max price you would lose money, so it’s forcing you to cash it out via sites… Not sure why they would put it so high,” wrote another confused and frustrated gamer.
Added someone else: “If the market dictates the price of the item, what the fuck is the point of the terminal? Just go to Steam market?”
One more tweet read: “This is NOT gaming.”
According to esports personality Jake Lucky, the prices will likely flucuate based on demand, but gamers are still skeptical how this will work and, even moreso, frustrated that Valve is even being this blatantly greedy.
While some CS2 players have noted that this is just for rich people to have fun wasting money, it still doesn’t set the most enticing tone to blebs who just want to get lucky with a cool skin and play some competitive CS2.
