It looks as though Nintendo Switch pre-orders to Canadian gamers will be delayed past the April 9 intended date, according to a statement released by Nintendo Canada to MobileSyrup.
The statement, which MobileSyrup states was recieved by Nintendo of Canada, reads as follows, “Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025 in order to align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the U.S. Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged.”
This comes in the wake of a similar delay that hit American Nintendo fans last Friday, which Nintendo said was so it could “assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions”. These conditions being the established tariffs that the USA has levied against countries like China, Vietnam, and more. Those two named countries being relevent as that’s where the Switch 2 is being manufactured.
Especially given increasing trade tensions between the USA and China, such tariffs would assuredly increase the price of buying the Nintendo Switch 2 in the USA. Why Canada has been hit by a similar delay is a bit less clear. Nintendo establishes in the statement that it’s to “align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the US”, but why that’s important isn’t expanded upon. Perhaps Nintendo is worried about consumers ordering consoles via Canadian middle men services to avoid extra costs, or simply wants to keep North American timings aligned as to not show preferential treatment to one country over the other.
