The PB TAILS Metal Crush Defender TMR aims to make a statement with its rugged, battle-damaged metal look. Visually, it’s striking, and manages to stand out in a market crowded with other official and custom controllers. However, this PB TAILS controller has its own set of functional features in addition to the unique aesthetic. After three weeks testing the pad, it’s time for my review.
Unique look
On the surface, the PB TAILS Metal Crush Defender TMR has a zinc alloy faceplate with a unique battle-scarred finish that means no two controllers are the same. The look is based on the Porsche 550 RS Spyder car. With the controller powered on, additional RGB lighting can be seen. This is customizable on the controller itself, meaning there’s no need to dive into any additional software.
TMR sticks
So it’s a good-looking controller, but what else can it do to justify the premium price tag? The TMR in the pad’s name refers to the Tunneling Magnetoresistance analog sticks, which promise greater energy efficiency, enhanced resolution and precision, as well as superior durability. For competitive gamers who want to dial in on exact sensitivities and enjoy a consistent experience, this will be of interest.
The Hall Effect linear triggers complement the TMR sticks with enhanced performance and longevity. They feel good to use and should last the test of time.
Get connected
In terms of connectivity, this controller can be paired with a wide range of systems. I made use of it on PC, Nintendo Switch, and Android. It worked well with no connectivity issues at all.
Battery life is comparable to your standard wireless gamepad, with this controller lasting multiple nights of evening gameplay before requiring a recharge. It’s neither impressive nor offensive, with a standard longevity.
The drawbacks
While the Metal Crush Defender does a lot right, there are some small drawbacks worthy of note. While the controller’s weight conveys a sense of quality and it does feel good in the hand, those used to lighter pads may find the PB TAILS pad a little fatiguing over time.
My other nit-pick is the TMR sticks. While the tech may be impressive, the sticks are a little slippery, which can take some getting used to. In future versions, I’d love to see some additional grip here.
