The AVerMedia CamStream 4K is aimed at creators looking to capture professional-quality video via DSLR or mirrorless straight to their PC or other compatible device. Acting as a middleman between the camera and PC, the CamStream 4K needs to boast enough grunt to take the high-quality image and successfully move it across. This becomes difficult when handling higher resolutions and frame rates, and lesser capture devices will begin to struggle or give up entirely. How does the CamStream 4K handle the task? This is my review.
Capture this
AVerMedia might be best known for its video game console and PC capture devices. Over the years, the company has provided some of the best tools for content creators looking to capture and/or stream video game content. In 2025, there’s been a shift, with audiences focusing less on the gameplay and more on the creators themselves, making it important for both budding and veteran creators to deliver high-quality capture of themselves. In an ideal world, creators would be able to simply plug a high-quality DSLR or mirrorless camera into their PC and use it as a webcam. However, this isn’t how it works. Instead, you need something like the CamStream 4K, which certainly boasts specs ready to impress.
As you can guess by the name, the CamStream 4K supports up to a 4K60 input. However, for those looking for higher frame rate support, 1440p144 and 1080p240 are also available. Uncompressed RGB24 and HDR10 are also supported, but the output will be limited to 1080p60 (P010). Ultimately, users will have to prioritize certain aspects over others.
Set it up
Setup is super simple, as the CamStream 4K plugs straight into your PC or other compatible device. As a UVC device, it’s immediately recognized and ready for configuration. The included USB-C to USB-A cable and camera adapter are nice inclusions, highlighting the versatility of the device. The CamStream 4K isn’t just for tucking away behind your PC, as you can use it in a more portable, on-the-go setup.
With my mirrorless plugged into one end and my PC into the other, the testing process could begin. Thankfully, this isn’t the most complicated product. Provided you know what the limitations are, it’s easy to configure exactly what you need. I’m happy to report that I experienced zero issues while capturing. There were no crashes or freezes, which is supremely important for a device designed to be used for live broadcasting.
Flawless performance

On PC, the experience has been flawless. Moving from RGB24 at 1080p60 to see how colors are handled, to 1440p144 to assess performance with gaming handhelds, back to “my default” 4K60 all worked as well as you’d expect. There were no hidden surprises. As noted by some early adopters, Mac performance may not be quite so flawless, so I’d be wary of that if you’re on the Apple side of things.
A couple of downsides

When it comes to downsides, I suppose there are two. First, the CamStream 4K does get quite warm, especially after multi-hour sessions. I found it hot enough to be worth noting, but I don’t think it’s a major concern when it comes to longevity or efficiency.
The other downside is the price. At $119.99, AVerMedia is pricing its CamStream 4K $20 above Elgato’s already dominant CamLink 4K. While there are some feature differences between them, I don’t think that AVerMedia’s product is necessarily “better.” The pricing is certainly a bold move!

Final Verdict
For $119.99, the AVerMedia CamStream 4K works as you’d expect, powering consistent, high-quality capture from DSLR and mirrorless cameras. It’s a very similar experience to that offered by Elgato’s CamLink 4K, to the point where I’d be happy with either of them. If you’re a die-hard AVerMedia user, then that might tempt you to drop the additional $20. For anyone else, I’d compare their highly similar specs and then factor which one is cheapest at the time. Both AVerMedia and Elgato love a sale!
